Shiatsu - traditional medicine meets modern understanding

Shiatsu is a type of body therapy that was developed in Japan but is based on traditional Chinese medicine. The execution is purely manual, using only thumbs, fingers, palms, and knuckles as well as elbows and knees. The goal is to restore the flow of energy in the energy pathways of the body, the so-called meridians.

The Shiatsu Way: From China to Japan

Shiatsu has its origins in traditional Chinese medicine and is based on the meridian system. Chinese doctors brought their art to Japan in the 6th century, where it was further developed with consideration of Japanese methods. This adapted healing doctrine received the name Shiatsu in the 20th century, which translates to finger pressure. Shiatsu gained the status of an independent form of therapy and thus a place in the new healthcare system. Shizuto Masunaga taught this manual therapy from 1959 to 1969, and through his modern approaches, he attracted Western students, leading to the international spread of Shiatsu. Today, various interpretations are taught, and Shiatsu is continuously developed through insights and discoveries.

How does a Shiatsu massage proceed?

Before the massage begins, the therapist gets an impression of the patient's condition. This includes complaints, symptoms, and their duration. The massage itself takes place on a soft mat or a futon. However, a massage table can also be used, which allows the legs to fold away thanks to the Shiatsu function. An example of such a massage table is the Avalon XD from Earthlite.

The therapist palpates all body areas where energy blockages are located. This is followed by a massage that is oriented along the course of the meridians. The gentle movements stimulate the flow of energy and stretch the muscles. The body parts that are massaged include thighs, feet, shoulders, and neck. Afterwards, the patient can feel the aftereffects of the touches during a short rest period.

A Shiatsu treatment lasts on average one hour and is performed regularly. Whether weekly or once a month depends on the patient, but the body must be given time to process the impulses in peace.

When is Shiatsu used?

Shiatsu can be applied in various situations; the spectrum is very broad. Shiatsu can help the patient with physical or mental stress, provide the body with new energy, or accelerate recovery processes. Additionally, Shiatsu has a relaxing and harmonizing effect. A treatment can also stimulate the supply of oxygen to the skin and promote circulation, allowing toxins to be transported away more quickly.

A Shiatsu treatment is not only absolutely relaxing but also promotes health. Various complaints can thus be alleviated, allowing one to return revitalized to everyday life.

In the following video, we show you how to quickly and easily bring an Earthlite table into the Shiatsu position.
